Dr. John Sparaga was born and raised on the shores of Lake Erie in Pennsylvania. He attended boys’ prep school there then went to college with the Benedictine monks at St. Vincent College and Arch Abbey, the headquarters of the Benedictine order in the world. With a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology, he entered the University of Pittsburgh Dental School in 1969 where he earned his DMD degree. Having served as a US Naval Reserve Officer while in school, he entered the active Navy in 1973 to spend his first year of service with the Marine Corps in Okinawa, Japan. There he met his soon-to-be wife, Mary, who taught school with the Department of Defense. Finishing his Naval service in San Francisco, Dr. Sparaga entered the University of the Pacific Dental School to earn his orthodontic certificate in 1977. He and Mary moved to Alaska to begin a career in orthodontics.
Dr. Sparaga is certified as a Diplomate by the American Board of Orthodontics and was the second orthodontist in Alaska to have earned the certification. Dr. Sparaga is a career-long member of the American Association of Orthodontist and has been the president of both the Anchorage Dental Society and the Alaska State Society of Orthodontists. He has lectured nationally for the American Association of Orthodontists and locally for the University of Alaska. He is involved in the development of new and progressive modes of care in Invisalign and was just awarded the status of one of the top 100 Invisalign Practices in the world! Currently, Dr. Sparaga lectures extensively on the West Coast to orthodontists who want to improve their skills in Invisalign treatment. Clear Smiles Alaska has been instrumental in the development of many of Invisalign’s more recent technical improvements.
Dr. Sparaga’s love of the great outdoors prompted him to take up flying after arriving in Alaska. He has logged over 3500 hours as pilot in command flying across Alaska’s remote landscapes. He never tires of getting out where the wilderness begins, hunting and fishing along the way. He has published hunting articles in Outdoor Life and Safari magazines.
Kids and a dog make up the rest of Dr. Sparaga’s family. Together they fish, hunt, fly, camp, and explore with the doctor whenever time allows. Joey, his son, is an Eagle Scout while Lauren, his daughter, is getting back into riding horses again while working full time and working toward her Nursing degree. Their mother Mary is a Master Gardener and tends the home fires. Needless to say, no grass grows under the Sparaga’s feet. They warmly welcome you to Clear Smiles Anchorage Alaska!
