Aesthetic Slenderizing

Aesthetic Slenderizing, also known as enamel reproximation, is where the doctor contours some of the teeth to make them slightly narrower. The process itself is the gentle removal of a tiny amount of the outer tooth surface, called enamel, generally between where the teeth touch. The purpose of Aesthetic Slenderizing is to acquire more space for the teeth and to ease the process of them coming into alignment. It also gives the teeth the lovely square or rectangular shape that people are accustomed to seeing. In a matter of minutes, the teeth can be slenderized and smoothed.

The purpose of Aesthetic Slenderizing is to better ensure to the successful outcome of orthodontic treatment. It also contributes to the long-term stability of results after patients are out of aligners. When teeth fit together comfortably and securely, they are less likely to shift after treatment.

At the end of treatment, the doctor also uses Incisal Dressing techniques to smooth the top edge of the teeth, as illustrated below. It carefully removes the bumps that children have on their adult teeth. Usually these bumps wear off on their own eventually, but when they don't, the doctor can help smooth them out to give a more polished and aesthetically pleasing appearance.
